Plainview City Council: January

Highlights from Plainview City Council’s January Meeting

PLAINVIEW CITY HALL — The City of Plainview kicked off the new year by honoring those that have served the city in the past.

The honors, presented by Mayor Rodney Minor and Vice Mayor Marilynn Toppins, went to William Von Shipman, Betty Satterfield, and Terry Todd. Each honoree was awarded a plaque of appreciation from the City of Plainview in recognition of their years of outstanding service to the city.

Zoning

Mayor Rodney Minor made a motion to accept a request for the Collins property, located on 1829 Tazewell Pike, to be rezoned from residential to commercial. After discussion, it was decided that the Planning Commission needed to develop a plan for the city’s future commercial development. It was also decided that this would be published in the Union News Leader and that a Public Hearing would be scheduled for February 13th at 7:00 p.m. prior to the city’s regular meeting.

Further, Zoning and Ordinance Books were passed out at the meeting and Mayor Minor made a motion to declare the books property of the city. According to the motion, the books should be returned to the city once the person possessing them is no longer involved in city affairs.

Law and Order
December was a month to both give and receive in the city of Plainview. Police Chief David Tripp reported that city police had a busy month. Not only was there a rise in the number of citations given by police, but the individuals responsible for the prior month’s vandalism of mailboxes, were arrested and brought into custody.

In order to deal with known drug trafficking areas, Mayor Minor proposed to move $3,000 from the drug fund into police expenditures. The funds will allow city police to set up drug busts in areas of the city that have had problems with drugs and drug trafficking in the past. The motion, seconded by Marilynn Toppins, passed.

Other Items

  • City council voted to allow the ambulance service to set their portable garage into concrete. The concrete pad will be provided by the ambulance service.
  • According to zoning official, Kelly Yount, no building permits were issued for the month of December.
  • There were several updates reported on current city projects. However, no changes or motions were made to any of the ongoing ventures.
