China Poisons Toothpaste, Pet Food, and Cough Syrup: Where’s the Embargo?

How many humans, pets, and livestock have to die before the US and the world smarten up and place an embargo all consumables from China? If melamine tainted pet food and livestock feed weren’t enough, now we are finding diethylene glycol in products from China.

At present:

The Food and Drug Administration will begin testing samples of all toothpaste imported into this country from China, a spokesman for the agency said yesterday.

The order by the F.D.A. comes after the discovery that some Chinese manufacturers had used small amounts of diethylene glycol, a poisonous ingredient used in antifreeze, in certain brands of toothpaste sold to stores in Panama, the Dominican Republic and Australia. One of the brands, Mr. Cool Junior, marketed for children, came in five flavors, including bubble gum and strawberry, Dominican Republic health authorities said.

There is no evidence that the tainted toothpaste, also sold under the names of Excel and Mr. Cool, is in the United States, or that anyone has been harmed by it.

This comes after the well publicized pet food contamination in the US and the less well publicized poisoning of children through tainted cough syrup. The cough syrup, like the toothpaste that’s currently being examined, was tainted with the main component in antifreeze. The story that’s not being told is one of hundreds and perhaps thousands of children in Panama alone that have died at the hands of unwitting parents and doctors that treated them with tainted cough syrup. If you’ve ever seen an animal die from anti-freeze you know what this type of death looks like.

Panama is the most recent victim. Last year, government officials there unwittingly mixed diethylene glycol into 260,000 bottles of cold medicine — with devastating results. Families have reported 365 deaths from the poison, 100 of which have been confirmed so far. With the onset of the rainy season, investigators are racing to exhume as many potential victims as possible before bodies decompose even more.

The deaths in Panama show a direct link to China. In addition, tens of thousands (many believe the number is much higher) around the world are most likely victims of lax regulations and counterfeit syrups linked to Chinese manufacturers. It’s way past time to ban the import of consumables from China.

Tainted toothpaste.

Tainted medicine.
